Back on the London Commute

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

What a delight it was to be in London on Wednesday.  Travelling from St Albans to Kings Cross St Pancras with the morning commuters and then on to Oxford Circus on the Victoria Line.

On one level it felt so familiar.  I realised that it had been 10 years since I used to commute across London on a regular basis.  This time was really quite different though.  I was in no real hurry.  I wasn’t following an imaginaery channel that my feet had worn over several months.  Dare I say it; I was ambling!  I was enjoying.  I was fascinated just watching everyone else.  No one ever looked back at me and I remembered that eye contact is (probably) illegal on the underground.

Once in Oxford Circus there was time for breakfast before my 10 O’clock appointment.  A warmed ham and cheese panini, a Cappuccino and no change from a tenner.  Not that I’m much of a money-watcher these days.  Time once again to sit and people-watch.  Much more fun than the unread copy of Metro that accompanied me.

The point of my journey was for a gathering at Tiscali’s head office.  A relaxed and informal exchange of ideas about the launch of the new Pipex business products.

It looks like we’ll be doing it all again soon.

Lincoln Mystery Plays 2008

Lincoln Mystery Plays 2008

Congratulations to Geoff Readman and his outstanding cast for their gripping portrayal of the 2008 Lincoln Mystery Plays.  The plays, performed last week at Southwell Minster, are this week at home in Lincoln Cathedral.  We witnessed last night’s pacy performance in the open air of the Cloisters and even the weather was good - they’ve not been so fortunate every night and I fear they can’t rely on it for the rest of the week either!

The players established a fictional community of Lincoln crafts folk and Guild members giving a ‘play within a play’ feel.  Each ‘Guild’ or group of tradesmen offered their part in the event by presenting their particular play.  For example the gardeners presented ‘Creation’ and the millers, ‘The Last Supper’.

The outstanding musical troupe led by Liam Robinson produced music and effects using traditional instruments and their songs were based on early Lincolnshire folk music.  A particular highlight was ‘While Shepherds Watched their Flocks’ to the tune of ‘The Lincolnshire Poacher’.  Many of the cast had outstanding singing voices.

Costume had a great impact on the production clearly depicting the wealth and resourcefulness of the tradesman combined with the particular biblical character they were attempting to portray.

Carrying the cross, and with his face on every poster, was Kevin Troughton who brought a very ‘normal bloke’ quality to the role of Jesus. Jason Hippisley (as a butcher) played a wonderfully vain and comic Herod who used his cleaver more often as a mirror than for chopping meat.  Satan was a good match for the Holy Trinity played this year by not one but three actresses, Aggi Gunstone, Jo Hollingworth and Janet Smith, not dissimilar to Shakespeare’s witches.

A final mention for Liz Lucas who held it all together in the oft thankless role as Producer.  I’m sure she doesn’t mean it when she says “Never again!”

AntiVirusXP2008 – Dont buy it!

PatrickMarkham.com PC Repair, Lincoln

PatrickMarkham.com

The latest nuisance to hit my clients’ computers is AntiVirusXP2008 (or AntiVirX08).  It claims to be a genuine Anti Virus tool.  It is in fact a very misleading piece of malware that reports that you have heaps of viruses and that the only way to get rid of them is to purchase the AntiVirusXP2008 tool.  Don’t be tempted!

It brings with it plenty of viruses causing anything from pop-ups to blue screens.  The application is not uninstallable using its own ‘uninstall routine’ and indeed using Add/Remove in Control Panel.

Quite how it is to be completely removed is still work in progress as far as I am concerned.  The instructions on the Symantec site help get rid of the necessary registry entries and I can get rid of the viruses but I’m still left with the PCs occasionally ‘blue-screening’.

UPDATE
I have learnt that the ‘blue screening’ is not in fact blue screening.  Its just a desktop image made to look like a blue screen.

I have also found that my tool of choice for removal of this virus is AVG Anti-Virus.   Ask me for a copy or buy it on ebay using this link.

FURTHER UPDATE
This virus is still around and it gets cleverer.  The latest version that I am dealing with calls itself ANTI VIRUS 360.  A bold move that rips off the respected Norton’s product name.  This edition of the pesky software appears to modify the Google page.  It tells you that you have an unregistered copy of Anti Virus 360 and Google recommends that you purchase it.  There are other sites that it wont even give you access to.  Instead you get a message that tells you that your PC is under threat and that you such purchase this malicious software.

I’m still finding that the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to get rid of this nuisance is to format and reinstall everything from scratch.  It’s the only way I can be sure… unless you know better?

Why do you have a dot ph (.ph) in your domain name? (Or the story behind markham.ph)

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Well, yes, it’s a good question and one that I do indeed get asked from time to time.  Here’s the answer…

I wanted an email address with nothing but my name in it. firstname@surname.com would have been ideal but hey all the good ones (markham.com, markham.co.uk) had been taken.  I used markham.org for a while. Or, specifically, I used patrick@markham.org for an annoying company had bought lots of domains and was selling them a name at a time!  Not an ideal solution.

Dot ph (.ph) is  the TLD (Top Level Domain) for the Philippines.  The Philippines were the first country to allow their domains to be sold to people outside of their own country.  markham.ph was available so it became mine and I gradually phased out markham.org over the following five years.

I’ve become quite fond of it now but it did annoy me once when I tried to sign up for something but I got blacklisted on suspicion of being some kind of untrustworthy foriegn rogue.

Gain fame with an odd shaped Yorkshire pudding

The Chef's Special?

The Chef's Special?

If you really want to get noticed on the internet, or specifically Facebook, what you need to do is take a photograph of an interestingly shaped foodstuff and publish it.  See it here.

My Yorkshire pudding from my afore-blogged meal at the White Hart was uploaded to Facebook as an afterthought and has since attracted considerable attention.

I think I may make a habit of photographing my food and publishing it for the amusement of my friends.  We’re so easily amused aren’t we?!

Life’s good. And it’s mine!

Monday, July 14th, 2008

I’m so lucky.  Today I took Monday off because I decided it would be more fun to help a friend with a ‘get-in’ with the lighting equipment for a theatre show.

For the last seven years I have not had to get out of bed and drive to an office and sit there making someone else rich.  So many jobs give us so little freedom and allow us just 20-something days off each year.  I can’t imagine that now!

Instead I spent today in the sun preparing for an open-air show in the beautiful surroundings of the Cathedral in uphill Lincoln.

Being self employed and running my own business is all it takes to give me such options and allow me to be in charge of my own life.   These days I have Tiscali Network to thank for my freedom.  It’s an easy-start home business with no investment.  Anyone else who is frustrated and stuck in a daily grind can join the team too!

Ahh, what to do tomorrow!  I’ll see what the weather does and make a choice.

Lunch at the White Hart with Aggi (30)

Patrick & Aggi

Patrick & Aggi

It’s been a while since I was last in Lincoln’s White Hart.  It’s also been a while since I wore those particular suit-trousers.  I can still get into them – just.  That was the first concern over with!

We dined in the Grille and it was unrecognisable.  Lots of refurb has been happening.  Not sure that I really liked what they’d done.

The company was excellent.  Organised by Jason in celebration of Aggi’s 30th birthday.  I guess there were about 25 of us dressed in our finest, many are currently in the Mystery’s cast.

Service (from staff in jeans, oh how the standards have fallen!) was painfully slow given that we had to run off before coffee.  That said, it was apparently booked as a ‘long leisurely lunch’.

What an excellent way to spend a Sunday afternoon.   Let’s do more.

Hello World!

Or perhaps not.  Perhaps just ‘Hello Patrick!’.  Maybe I am the only one who sees this page.  If you are reading this and your are not me then please let me know.  It feels very lonely at the moment.

This article marks my FIRST EVER BLOG!  That’s right; I’ve never even commented on someone else’s blog.  In fact, I’m not even a big reader of blogs.  I’ve heard a lot about blogs so I thought that perhaps it was time that I got involved – by jumping in at the deep end and publishing my very own blog here on markham.ph

I really have no idea at this stage what my blog will do or where it will go.  I dont really know what I want to say.  Perhaps I will have a daily rant about something.  Perhaps that will turn into a weekly rant and then a monthly rant and then I’ll lose interest and forget my password.  On the other hand it may flourish and become a hive of activity.

Anyway I have to think about getting ready to go out for lunch now.  Maybe I’ll post a note about it later.
